Maps of the Unfinished Morning
A
Poetic Libretto
by
Rebeca
Thomas
Author's Note: Maps of the Unfinished Morning began as a series of blackout poems created from printed pages. Each poem was uncovered rather than written in the traditional sense, revealing unexpected connections and images. The accompanying photographs are my own artistic arrangements and interpretations of the original blackout pages, created to complement and expand the landscapes suggested by the poems.
the very beautiful
earth
girl
her
breath
wronged
by suffering
and
sound
dressed
and convulsed
awake—
be
afraid
i am
well
your
tears
just a
pumpkin
that
scooped up
six
rats
a
garden changed
all
those things
touching
pearls
of spun glass
penetrating
light
side-eye
making
all
fresh
outside
doubt
fails
rattling
full
remarks
his
eyes listened
to the
dialogue
of his
theory
the sea
hedge
brilliant
blinding night
cackling
cliffs
shaped
like gods
appear
away
then
near
like
hell
always
visible
heaving
ripples
streaked
day
splashed
down
covering
the past
mixed
conspiracy
to
carry connection
in
pursuit
of
sources
paper
face that
reached
California
split
into parts
of
morning
my own
talking road
on the
other turn
sight,
hope
encouraged
brook
sounds
to edge
across
herself
soft
as a
flowerbed
